Corrosion under insulation (CUI) : how to prevent it
Corrosion under insulation (CUI) is one of the most prevalent issues in
the process industry. It poses a significant threat to productivity, revenue
stream, and most importantly the safety of those on the job site. Roughly
60% of pipe leaks in refinery and plant piping are linked directly to CUI, meaning
that finding a detection solution is paramount to your business’ success.
There’s no one environment that guarantees a specific corrosion rate,
however, there are conditions that may lead to a higher incidence of CUI. These
include:
· Hot or humid
environments
· Climates with high
precipitation
· Marine environments
· Atmospheres that
are conducive to sweating, or contain chlorides and sulphides
A key part of avoiding corrosion is diligent inspection. While visual
assessment is possible in some cases, it is by far the most expensive and
time-consuming as it involves the removal and replacement of insulation.
Therefore, finding suitable non-destructive testing methods is extremely
beneficial. The Russell Bracelet
Probe, for example, can detect corrosion at speeds of up to 5 feet/minute
through insulation, fireproofing, and aluminium and stainless-steel jackets.
Once corrosion has been detected, you will be able to repair pipes,
tanks, and vessels before significant
damage occurs. As a result, you save time, money, and ensure the longevity of
your equipment. Contact
